As a boy, Patrick Kelly could easily have been given up as a lost cause.

He had a terrible time in school, scoring in the bottom 5 percent of statewide achievement tests. Reading was a challenge.

At home, education wasn’t a priority. His father worked in a rock quarry, and Kelly grew up in a blue collar enclave of Milbank that was on the poor side of the tracks. Money was tight. The family used food stamps, and his father at times was happy to just keep the lights on…
